Going Behind the scenes at Wimbledon 2014

The lawns have been manicured, the flowers watered and players warmed up for Wimbledon 2014, the grand slam tennis tournament in England.

The 41 mown grass courts will soon feel the thud of tennis shoes from 480 players, and 38,500 daily visitors are expected descend on the All England Lawn Tennis Club grounds in Southwest London over the next two weeks.

As well as being one of four major tennis grand slams throughout the year, Wimbledon has a special attraction for its quintessentially British feel—particularly the consumption of strawberries and cream and Pimm’s drinks. It is estimated 28,000 kilograms of strawberries, 7,000 liters of cream and 200,000 glasses of Pimm’s will be consumed over the two-week event. Also in keeping with the traditions of the event, players adhere to an all-white dress code, and staff wear navy and green uniforms.

Last year, Andy Murray (@andymurray) became the first British player in 77 years to win the men’s singles championship at Wimbledon when he beat Siberia’s Novak Djokovic (@djokernole).

"I can’t wait to get started on Monday," he says. "I love playing at Wimbledon, and it’s an honor to open The Championships, I’ll give it everything I’ve got."

Victoria Azarenka (@vichka35) is also preparing for The Championships. “I’m so excited to be back at Wimbledon,” she says. “Before the tournament begins you can catch me at Wimbe village, the Player’s Party, and, oh, it’s strawberries and cream season! But when the tournament starts, I’m all business.”

This year, Instagrammers were given access to the lawns ahead of play, and tennis stars have been sharing behind the scenes from Wimbledon in the lead up to The Championships. For a behind-the-scenes look, check out the following accounts on Instagram:

The 2014 French Open on Instagram

To view more photos and videos from the tournament, explore the Stade Roland Garros and Le Roland Garros location pages.

The Roland Garros (@rolandgarros) tennis tournament, also known as the French Open, has begun with 32 first-round singles matches starting on Sunday. As one of four major grand slams held throughout the year in professional tennis, the clay court tournament has been held in Paris since 1891. The competition is named after Roland Garros, a French aviation pioneer who was a big fan of the eponymous stadium.

Players will compete for the singles and doubles crowns over the next two weeks. The winners of the men’s and women’s singles in 2014 will each receive a €1,650,000 prize, a 10% increase on last year’s awards.

Tips from the US Open: Taking the Perfect Action Shot

For more photos and videos from the US Open, be sure to visit the Arthur Ashe Stadium - USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center location page and follow the official accounts for the world tours: @atpworldtour and @wta.

The US Open (@usopen) is in full swing in New York! The Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, and over the next few days the men’s and women’s champions will be crowned. If you’re attending the US Open matches or just playing tennis with friends, be sure to keep these mobile sports photography tips from the folks at Getty in mind:

  • Pay attention to where your point of focus is set in the frame. The focal point can make or break an image, so make sure you have one and tap the screen to focus on that spot.
  • Take advantage of the morning and afternoon light. Bright light can be harsh, but early or late light creates beautiful, dark backdrops that accentuate a well-lit subject.
  • Take your photo earlier than you think you need to. A tennis ball is faster than you think!
  • Think outside of the rally. Action shots don’t just mean the ball and racquet—be ready for players’ reactions and celebrations.

This weekend, Wimbledon (@wimbledon) will name its two singles champions. The Ladies’ Singles final takes place tomorrow, and the Gentlemen’s Singles final follows on Sunday. The annual event is the oldest—and many would say most prestigious—tennis tournament in the world and is the only Grand Slam still played on grass.

Thousands of tennis fans have flocked to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London over the last few weeks to watch the matches and pageantry. Wimbledon traditions include a strict all-white dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by spectators and Royal patronage.
