The Iowa caucuses, a major political event in the United States, were held yesterday. The event was captured through photos on Instagram by major news organizations such as Good Morning America and PBS NewsHour. Most notably, President Barack Obama joined Instagram to share his first Instagram photo, a behind-the-scenes shot as he addressed Iowa caucus-goers.
A flash mob of Santas took to the streets of New York & San Francisco yesterday for SantaCon. According to SantaCon NYC, “Santacon is a non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political and non-sensical Santa Claus convention that occurs once a year for absolutely no reason.” Looking at the photos shared with Instagram through the #santacon tag, participants spread lots of cheer & joy from coast to coast!

We’re always honored when users share important moments with us, and we love that Taylor Swift is sharing her life with her fans through Instagram, so we wanted to send a huge congratulations to her on taking home three awards at Sunday’s American Music Awards, including Artist of the Year!

At around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement, who had taken up residency for the past 2 months in Zuccotti Park, were cleared by the NYPD. Photos of the empty park, relocated protests, and protesters reentering the park just a few hours ago were broadcasted through Instagram throughout the day.

The annual NYC Marathon was this past weekend and we saw so many inspiring photos posted to Instagram of the 26.219 mile, or 42.195 kilometer, run through the five boroughs of New York City.
This year Kenyan athlete Geoffrey Mutai won the men’s event in a time of 2:05:05& Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia won the women’s race in a time of 2:23:15. Congratulations to all 46,795 people who completed the race! Be sure to check out more photos at #nycmarathon.
Roasted pumpkin seeds, candy corn, trick-or-treating at that one creepy house in your neighborhood, dogs developing a case of spaghetti legs the second they’re forced to wear a costume. What’s not to love about Halloween?!

CMJ 2011 just ended and judging by the photos that have been hash-tagged with #CMJ there were tons of fantastic soon-to-be-discovered bands that performed! For those of you not familiar with the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival, College Music Journal describes the event below:

Since September 17th members of Occupy Wall Street have been living and protesting in the streets of New York City, referring to their occupancy as a protest for American revolution.
We’ve been watching this story unfold on Instagram. Photos tagged #occupywallstreet show protestors and police, celebrities who have come to show support as well as the sleeping arrangements for the 200 people who have taken up indefinite residency in Zuccotti Park. The photos that have been shared provide first hand accounts of the event as they’re happening.
The Photo Essay Project • September 26 • New York City
The Photo Essay Project, organized by Bindu Wiles, is a 5 week coursewith photo assignments that uses Instagram & Tumblr in order to “get you progressively outside your comfort zone both photographically and emotionally.” Though Wiles is in New York City, she will be helping and inspiring participants through live web cam sessions, which will also be recorded and shared online. ACP Festival: #iPhoneography • October 6 - December 31 • Atlanta
This year at the Atlanta Celebrates Photography festival there will be an exhibition called #iPhoneography from October 6th through December 31st at Gallery 1 in Atlanta featuring mobile photography by Instagram users @konstruktivist, @_raygun, @sionfullana, @anton_in_nyc, and @koci. According to the creators of 1197.is (full disclosure: our very own @jayzombie is one of the co-founders!) “the first camera phone photo was taken on June 11th, 1997. In honor of that date, 1197 is a one-day conference dedicated to mobile & iPhone photography, presented by Bolt | Peters and Blurb.” The conference takes place October 22nd at Mission Bay in San Francisco. Instagram members located in London decided, over the course of several InstaMeets, to organize and curate an exhibit called “My World Shared,” which takes place October 22-23rd at the East Gallery in London.
