Ivrea, a town in northern Italy, plays host to one of the biggest food fights in Europe every year. Attendees in traditional dress from the middle ages flood the streets and are encouraged to pelt each other with oranges.

The Carnevale di Ivrea (Battle of the Oranges) is the fabled recreation of a medieval battle between townspeople and guards—the origins of which are a mixture of legend and history about driving an evil tyrant out of the city. With horse-drawn carts and helmets, organized teams gather in the town’s square for the battle, leaving only a trail of pulp and peel as evidence of destruction.

Carnaval in Brazil

For more photos and videos from Carnaval 2014 in Brazil, explore the Sambódromo and Sambodromo do Anhembi location pages and browse the #Carnaval, #Salvador, #Olinda and #Recife hashtags.

In Brazil, it’s jokingly said that the year only really begins after Carnaval, the annual five-day festival before Ash Wednesday that marks the beginning of Lent. Brazilians take Carnaval seriously: most of the country shuts down to take part in the festivities and some participants begin planning their costumes and events up to a year in advance. The cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Vitória are known for giant parades led by samba schools, which bring in millions of viewers in person and through televised broadcasts. Smaller parades, or blocinhos, are also very popular as anyone can join in the parade as it progresses.

In the northeast, Carnaval is heavily influenced by Afro-Brazilian culture—and especially by its music. Huge crowds follow trucks blasting live music performances from famous Brazilian stars. This year’s singers include Claudia Leitte (@claudialeitte), Ivete Sangalo (@veveta), Gilberto Gil (@gilbertogil), Preta Gil (@pretagil) and Daniela Mercury (@danielamercury).

The World Celebrates Carnival

Instagrammers around the world are sharing scenes from this week’s Carnival festivities. In cities across Brazil, samba schools spend the four days leading up to Ash Wednesday competing in parades that can last for hours. In Trinidad and Tobago, Carnival’s extravagant street parades, calypso music, and limbo competitions make it the country’s biggest event of the year; it’s said that if the islanders are not celebrating Carnival, then they are preparing for it! In Venice, masked baroque revelers march through historic streets and dance at the Gran Ballo delle Maschere.
