Instagramming the Beauty and Mayhem of Burning Man

Every year on the last Monday of August, tens of thousands of people make the pilgrimage to the Nevada desert for Burning Man, a week-long celebration of art, music and general mayhem.

Burning Man began as a small gathering in 1986 but has since grown to a spectacle of over 50,000 attendees. Despite its massive size, attendance is actually tightly regulated, and participants are selected from a much larger pool through a complicated, multi-round lottery.

For those unable to get ahold of a ticket, many “Burners” have documented their experience through Instagram, allowing the outside world a peek into Burning Man’s ephemeral Black Rock City.

Black Rock City – Photos from Burning Man 2012

What started as a small gathering at San Francisco’s Baker Beach in 1986 has turned into a popup city of 50,000+ in the Black Rock Desert 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada. Many who have been to previous Burning Man events say that it’s impossible to explain or describe the experience to those who have never been, and that it’s something you must experience firsthand.

For the unfortunate people who could not procure tickets in this year’s complex multi-round, random selection system of ticket sales — or those who simply couldn’t escape to the desert for 7 days — many beautiful photographs of the themed camp sites, art, unexpected dust storms, and the spectacular burning of the wooden Man have been shared with Instagram at Black Rock City and #burningman2012.

We’re starting to see #latergrams (what we like to call images that are posted to Instagram well after the photo was initially taken) from this year’s Burning Man appear! “What is Burning Man" you ask? Well, we’ll let their short description and the following featured photos of the Black Rock Desert do the talkin’:

Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever.
