Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Yesterday was December 12, which marked the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of Mexico’s most important holidays.
According to Roman Catholics, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant named Juan Diego on this day in 1531. The apparition of Mary instructed him to build a church on the site in her honor. When Diego was asked to prove this miraculous vision, Mary instructed him to gather roses from a barren hill, which, when presented to the local Bishop, turned into a piece of fabric emblazoned with the Virgin Mary’s image.
The icon hangs today in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and is a destination for millions of Catholic pilgrims each year.
