The Colorado Plateau’s Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii) sits within the Navajo Nation Reservation on the Arizona-Utah state line. The famous buttes, or “Mittens” as they’re fondly called, stand 1,000 ft (300 meters) above the valley floor. To get there, visitors must drive through the park on a 17 mile dirt road that takes up to 2-3 hours.
